Mr Andrew Horsley, director of executive search firm Horsley & Company said some companies were employing staff on a part time or contracting basis to hold on to talent.

"Organisations recognise the importance of being lean, but you can only cut off so much fat before you get through the muscle into the bone", Mr Horsley said.
