Andrew Horsley, a headhunter who places non executive directors as well executives, says candidates are now being much more careful about which boards they put themselves up for.
"You've seen so many examples of directors going in starry eyed and the whole thing came unstuck", he says referring to the dot.com casualties.
He says the new breed of chairman has to have all the diplomatic and leadership skills to deal with awkward analysts and activist shareholders, as well as the traditional ability to achieve cohesion within a board.
