Andrew Horsley has seen more than a few of these (successful business creators and entrepreneurs) in his 25 years of executive recruitment.  “It is all to do with volition, about how strong is the desire and do they have the bottle to do it?  Sometimes there is a trigger that prompts a move from a wage earner to an independent generator of wealth,” he says.

This could be an employer going bust, or getting retrenched or fired and having made enough money to use as a jumping-off point.

“A satisfied need is no longer a motivator, so if you have satisfied a need to become a chief executive or partner you can become more creative and opportunistic in the way you deploy your wealth.”

“It’s always interesting to see at what point they push the boat out from the shore to see if they can make it on their own rather than as part of the mother ship,” he says.
