Executive recruiter, Andrew Horsley of Horsley & Company says the trick in tough times is to "stick with your program, don't flop around but do have a sense of opportunism."
He agrees that "discontinuities in careers are going to be even greater in these difficult economic times" and employees will find that they will be spending even shorter periods in particular jobs, sectors or industries.
"There will be greater volatility in the senior to upper middle-level management", he says, urging workers to avoid over-specialisation. At the same time they need to develop good general skills "and if you have a spike of specialisation, hang on to that."
