Director of executive search consultancy Horsley & Company Pty Limited, Andrew Horsley, says that body language in the office can sometimes indicate layoffs are imminent.

"I have heard it said someone's got cancer which means that they are not long to be a member of that body corporate as it were", Horsley says. "People might be cut out of the deal flow or out of the transaction flow".

Horsley says some professionals see layoffs coming, but knows of "other occasions where I've seen an executive given all the overtures and blandishments that there was going to be a long career for them, to find the axe falls the next day".
